The Council

Your local council has an overall responsibility for the well-being of your local neighbourhood. Their work falls into three main categories:

  • representing your local community
  • delivering services to meet local needs
  • striving to improve quality of life

Colgate Parish Council is made up of 9 councillors one of which is elected as a Chair and one a Vice Chair. All Councillors are volunteers.

What do local councillors do?

Decision-making: through attending meetings and committees with other elected members, councillors decide which activities to support, where money should be spent, what services should be delivered and what policies should be implemented. Commenting on Planning Applications is a large part of the councillors job.

Monitoring: councillors make sure that their decisions lead to efficient and effective services by keeping an eye on how well things are working.

Getting involved locally: as local representatives, councillors have responsibilities towards their constituents and local organisations. This often depends on what the councillor wants to achieve and how much time is available.

Beverly Clayden is the Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer who is employed by the Council for 12 hours per week.
The Litter Warden works 4 hours weekly.

Meetings of the Parish Council are held on the second Monday monthly excluding August and December, alternating between Colgate School, Faygate Village Hall and Durrants Village Social Club for venues. Residents are welcome to attend these meetings and have the opportunity to raise issues. There is an Annual Parish Meeting in April and an Annual Parish Council Meeting in May where the Chair is elected.
Members of the public should be aware that being present at a meeting of the Council or one of its Committees or Sub-Committees will be deemed as the person having given consent to being recorded (photograph, film or audio recording) at the meeting, by any person present.

Planning meetings are held on an as required basis, please refer to Notice Boards for details. Residents are welcome to attend these meetings and have the opportunity to raise issues on the planning application. All Planning Meetings are held on a Wednesday at 6pm at Colgate Village Hall.
